A nonbinding summit communique has been issued. And a "work plan" has been agreed to.
Oh, yes. And there will be another summit in two years. The dream lives on.

Krauthammer is right. I was disgusted with the conditions that promote such thinking, and had a stark reminder that the more things change the more they stay the same: Moving my books back on to their shelves in my newly painted library, I came upon the following front page headline on a clipping I'd saved: "Iraqi missile hits U.S. ship; 3 die, 30 missing."

The last two paragraphs of this article read:

"We believe this was a mistaken attack on the part of the Iraqi planes. There is no indication of any deliberate, hostile intent.

"It appears to be a case of mistaken identity. We don't know why it happened. But the State Department has already registered two protests."

The date on this issue of the Oregon Fishwrap: May 18, 1987.
