Mirror Image Internet Announces One of the World's Largest Implementations of Oracle-R- Internet Infrastructure Database Mirror Image Maximizes Internet Speed and Cuts Bandwidth Costs with New Global Content Distribution Network Powered by Oracle8i(TM) WOBURN, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 23, 1999-- Mirror Image Internet, Inc. today announced that it is using an Oracle8i(TM) (NASDAQ: ORCL) database as a major component of one of the world's largest next-generation Internet infrastructures. Mirror Image's large scale, distributed content network delivers dramatically enhanced Internet access speeds to end users globally. Mirror Image is principally owned by The Scandinavia Company, Inc. (AMEX: SCF).
The new installation is intended to help relieve the bandwidth requirements of rapidly growing global Internet traffic, particularly in Europe. Mirror Image will use Oracle8i in its massive bandwidth network nodes in London and Frankfurt, yielding significant performance and functionality benefits for its customers, which include Internet Service Providers, content providers and enterprises. Mirror Image also plans to use Oracle8i for its network nodes in St. Louis and Washington, DC and in other locations throughout the world.
"Oracle is the world leader in information management," said Chuck Rozwat, senior vice president of server technologies at Oracle Corporation. "Utilizing the Internet features of Oracle8i enables Mirror Image to make the movement of vast amounts of multimedia information over the Internet faster, more reliable and more secure than ever before."
"This is just the beginning of our quest to build the world's first large-scale global network for rapid content distribution," said David Wu, president of Mirror Image Internet, Inc. "Together with Oracle and our other partners, we will continue to expand our network, and move toward our goal of providing dramatic speed boosts of two to ten times for 75 percent of all Web traffic."
Mirror Image Internet offers services including central caching, large specialized caching, broadband audio and video services and global content distribution. These applications are made possible by Mirror Image's open network, built using highly scalable content distribution nodes deployed at key Internet exchange points around the world. Each node can intelligently store terabytes of web and multimedia data and distribute it across the entire Internet infrastructure of that region. The result is a dramatically faster Internet at a lower cost, enabling ISPs and content providers to deliver maximum speed performance without the need for making costly infrastructure investments.
Mirror Image's patent pending solutions, built on proprietary technology, use the Oracle8i database to manage vast amounts of different types of Internet data, including rich multimedia files comprised of images, sound clips, and video. Oracle8i contains code optimized for use with Internet data and represents a significant upgrade from previous versions.
