Blackboard to Buy Mass Messaging Company NTI Group for $182 Million
biz.yahoo.com

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Educational software company Blackboard Inc. said Monday it will buy privately held mass messaging company NTI Group Inc. for $182 million to expand its reach in education communication.

Blackboard will pay $132 million in cash and $50 million in stock and may pay up to an additional $17 million in stock if NTI reaches undisclosed financial targets over two years.

Blackboard said the deal will help it grow as more educational institutions use the Internet to communicate with their students.

It said it expected the U.S. alert and notification market to grow to an estimated $1.2 billion in revenue by 2011.

Sherman Oaks, Calif.-based NTI provides mass notification systems to schools and has contracts covering about 200 colleges and universities.

Messages sent under the NTI system can be instantaneously sent by landline, cell phone, personal organizer, e-mail and other methods.
