Yes, all creatures on this planet are related. That is the kernel of truth behind the Gaia philosophy.

I think the mistake you make is in assuming that a DNA sequence or combination of genes can arise once and once only. That would imply that the same gene is only available to direct descendants. Genes from all plants and animals are remarkably similar and so any change in a new generation has a good chance of being essentially the same as a gene from some other organism. It's similar to two lovely ladies showing up at a party in the same color dress even though they are not related.

It could also be that fireflies and sea creatures produce light in different ways. There are at least 10 different ways that eyes evolved and they all see.
