Tuesday 15th September Betaresearch highlights its d-box standard Betaresearch has come to IBC highlighting the success of its d-box network. "Despite the European Union's June '98 decision against joint ventures among the key players - Kirsh Group, Bertellsman and Deutsche Telekom - for digital television in Germany, the company's d-box digital set-top box has become the defacto standard," says Betaresearch Managing Director Manuel Cubero (above). The growing d-box network includes German providers Premiere and DF-1, as well as Deutsche Telekom's new independent digital TV service. Betareseach (Stand 7.327), however, claims its d-box is an open platform. Fully DVB compatible and offering DVB-SI support, the d-box is applicable to all market players from cable TV, Pay TV, business TV, data broadcasting and interactive.
"BetaResearch specialises in conditional access," says BetaResearch product manager, Dr Axel Garbers. "We also offer such applications as games and teletext, and you can use your set-top box as a satellite modem and input data into a PC at high bandwith. Also we offer interactive services such as home banking and shopping, so we have encoding and decoding which is really secure.
"We utlise an open application programme interface, and we'll offer the system to every broadcaster, so they can develop their own electronic programme guide. Also games providers can develop online games." |
