EchoStar Files Suit Against Gemstar
LITTLETON, Colo. (AP) -- EchoStar Communications Corp. announced Tuesday it has filed a lawsuit against Gemstar-TV Guide International Inc. [NasdaqNM:GMST - news] and its Colorado subsidiaries, charging that they violated various antitrust laws and laws governing competition.

In the suit, the Littleton-based satellite television company detailed Gemstar's alleged illegal and monopolistic licensing practices in its interactive, on-screen programming guides. Gemstar also publishes TV Guide magazine.

Also on Tuesday EchoStar contested Gemstar's allegations of patent infringement in a suit filed by Gemstar in federal court in North Carolina. In addition, the company filed counterclaims attacking the validity and enforceability of the Gemstar patent.

EchoStar is seeking monetary damages and injunctive relief to stop Gemstar's allegedly improper activities.
