"to run IU, i had to go to the website and download the new file. i saved it on my desktop then opened it. it seemed to extract files. is this the correct procedure to use to have IU update NAV?" you can do it that way if you prefer. i go to the symantec download site securityresponse.symantec.com follow the links for Download Virus Definitions (Intelligent Updater Only) then i just open the file there, skipping the save to desktop step. these are trusted files from a trusted site. at one time i was saving the files and scanning them before opening but that eventually seemed like overkill, even for a cautious guy like me. "it seemed to extract files" when you follow the method i use (opening the file not saving), the dialogs will prompt you to see if you want to install the new defs. say yes. then just read the ensuing dialogs and soon one will tell you that your machine has been successfully updated. there should be no question as to whether defs 'seemed' to be installed or not. confirm this by checking in the NAV System Status dialog for the date of your virus definitions. although it takes awhile to explain this process, it goes very quickly, with maybe only twice as many clicks as when using LU. and it's worth it to be retrieving defs that LU says are not available. post back if questions hth
