Several of my ancestors were abolitionists to help free the slaves and help them to escape to the North. Also had several who fought in the Civil War for the North. One was only 24, a farmer, and felt so strongly that we MUST keep the United States, that he literally put down his plow, and joined in Iowa. He was wounded in LA in 1864, a POW and died one month later. I have 7 of his letters to his sister.

Another family (Southern) had two brothers who fought against each other.

To my knowledge, there were NO KKK in all of the families I've studied.

Also, you probably remember that even as late as the 1930's, the country was segrated....even Washington DC. Sad, but true.
