Hey wily,
"I was interested in the Courier only because I had seen comments on SI that it was such a superior piece of equipment, with improved connections, etc. I had thought before that a modem was a modem."
Well, there is a big differences between modems, and not just the speed. One 56k v.90 may not be as good as other v.90's. Although the cost involved with a courier I v.everything may be a bit much, it IS a quality piece of equipment.
"I also wanted to get an external modem to free up slots."
Good point, however, you would have to use the extra IRQ needed for that external COM port. By default, I disable COM 1 & 2 to free up IRQs for the rest of the system. If that's not a problem though, I wouldn't worry about it.
"Voice capabilities: For internet telephony. It's coming. Does your modem need voice and full-duplex to do this or can your sound card substitute?"
In many instances, your sound card can substitute, but it's always nice to have all the features on one card instead of sharing the load.
And in regards to Sygate, it's a fantastic program all around. That and being able to use multilink for NT are some of the things I like about my office setup. :)
