CB, the gang rape approach to utilitarianism is a false application of the idea of the greatest good for the greatest number. That's a bit like drawing the lines of a monopoly very tightly to prove a monopoly. By drawing a bigger circle around the monopoly, the monopoly inevitably disappears.

Yes, Microsoft has a monopoly on Windows for Intel ASICs, but draw the boundaries to include other communications methods and suddenly the monopoly has gone away. Include any operating system and even the operating monopoly has gone away.

Similarly, the intention of the concept of the greatest good is to include all people and that would also include all future people. Which of course becomes impossibly abstract and immeasurable, but it is not meant to mean that some malevolent morons can hold a ballot in some bush and declare themselves a majority and therefore expressing some ethical greater good.

If said moron rapists quoting greatest good ethics can't read this, utilitarianism.com they should be castrated or executed in the cause of the greatest good for the greatest number.

The IRA have belatedly figured out that it wasn't an ethical thing to murder hundreds of innocent people including many children - a bit late and let's hope they do the decent thing and extinguish their own lives as penance. Fat chance. Their sorrow is strategic and cynical, designed to curry favour for continued American financial support of their terrorist ways. They should have thought more carefully about the greatest good for the greatest number before murdering and maiming children in their malevolent mania.

More important than the greatest good is the idea of voluntary interaction as a greater ethical standard. That precludes 99% voting to enslave somebody and calling it the greatest good for the greatest number. However, we still live in barbarism so that's wishful thinking and the nearest approximation we'll get for a long time is majority determination of who gets eaten, enslaved or subordinated. However, we might still have a long way to go of the toughest gang of apes in the jungle takes all, with no reference to ethics. Much of the world still lives like that.
