The result would be a real pyrrhic victory for those who want people to carpool. Traffic for the vast majority of motorists would get significantly worse, resulting in lower fuel economy, more smog, and much longer commute times in a region whose residents can't afford to spend any more time on the road.

At least in NYC, you can take trains to anywhere. San Francisco's BART is also pretty good, though inadequate if you want to travel outside of SF but inside the Bay Area. I wish Southern California had a better train system.
