Wiki has some pretty good up to the minute pictures and info about the Iceland Volcano....If that plume wasn't ash and smoke, what else would those folks think it should be called?

>>>>> On 24 April 2010, 11 days since the second eruption, the eruption plume reached 13,000 feet (4,000 m) with mild explosive activity. The volcano is showing no sign of termination of eruption, and lava flow determined to have commenced on 21 April 2010 is melting the thick glacier ice north of the crater, resulting in water flow of 100-120 m3/s evident in semi-continuous discharge of meltwater from Gígjökull and causing steam generation where lava meets the ice. Flow of lava and magma were estimated at 20-40 t/s. Volcanic tremor activity remains the same over the past 2–3 days.[53][64] [65] The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) warned that the volcano is liable to revert to explosive eruptions at any time.[66] <<<<<
