EPA seeks to halt pollution from agricultural sources.

The federal environmental agency plans to develop rules that would apply to feedlots and hog and poultry farms.

WASHINGTON- Cattle feedlots and large hog and poultry farms would have to take steps to keep animal waste from polluting the nation's waterways under an Environmental Protection Agency plan to improve water quality.
The EPA said Thursday that it would soon develop regulations to require livestock feedlots and poultry farms to obtain pollution permits and control waste from their operations.
The regulations would apply to about 6,000 commercial livestock and poultry farms around the country. It also will be the first federal attempt to regulate these facilities through the Clean Water Act.
