I think if the US took Hussein out right now they would be openly inviting several large bombs to go off in the US. Even though Saddam is unpopular in his own country, the arab world, or rather the Islamic world, would see the perfect excuse to indulge in a bit of anti Americanism.

It is my belief that Saddam will not be influential for too much longer. He is too unpopular to carry on in Iraq. If he manages to make further inroads into beating sanctions, and the benefits filter thru to the people, then maybe he will last longer. Or if the Israelis give further reason to unite the arab states who have annexed Iraq then also he has a chance. Otherwise, he will make sure he goes voluntarily (probly by faking his own death). I expect him to have a "funeral" in the next few months before he finds himself having a real funeral. His son is currently being rapidly groomed for succession.
