Benzene is present generally in the range of .5-1.5% by vol in the USA and Canada. Air quality laws are having the effect of reducing the aromatics (includes benzene) and stipulating the uasge of oxygenates. This latter item is responsible for higher gasoline prices in cities such as Chicago ($.10/gal retail) that are attempting to meet/raise air quality. Benzene is a carcinogen, responsible for nonlymphocytic leukemia (bone marrow toxin). While cancer causing mechanisms are not understood, occurance increases when exposure to benzene and polynuclear aromatics (more than one fused benzene ring) is present.
