HD settops are just proto-types today. Their main function is to solve the bandwidth problem. They can not store video permanently, just one movie at a time.

BTW: If you broadcast a Digital signal to them, you don't need an encoder. They will just capture the digital feed and record it. Decode will happen when you play it back.
