HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 4, 1996--

Compaq Web Server Prevails Over Systems from Sun,
Digital, IBM, Intergraph and Others

Compaq Computer Corp. (NYSE: CPQ) -- the world's leading server
vendor -- announced that its ProLiant 5000 received the highest rating
of nine web server systems tested by the Computer Reseller News (CRN)
Test Center. According to CRN, the #1 ranking is based on Compaq's
achievement of this best benchmark performance, combined with its
strong channel and support programs.
The CRN WebStone 2.0.1 benchmark testing found the Compaq
ProLiant, when configured as a web server, combined the best
performance results. Not only did Compaq offer the full range of
market development funds programs, it also provided a complete range
of reseller support services. Addditionally, the Compaq ProLiant
performed the best, reaching an astounding average of 409 connections
per second (CPS) at a throughput of 62 Mbits per second (Mbps).
CRN wrote, "Compaq continues to prove that it is a favorite among
resellers, providing technical excellence and first-class support and
service." Additionally, the article indicated, "If it is sheer
performance the reseller demands, the Compaq is the obvious
choice...Compaq's ProLiant is pure class."
"Compaq is proud to offer award-winning Internet products such
as the ProLiant 5000," said John T. Rose, Compaq's Senior Vice
President and Group General Manager, Enterprise Computing Group.
"With leading product lines, partnerships, and a strong market
position, the company is uniquely positioned to deliver the benefits
of the Internet to customers and to capitalize on the rapid growth in
this marketplace."

Nine Web Servers Compared to ProLiant 5000

Computer Reseller News, a major news weekly dedicated to the
microcomputer reseller industry with a readership of approximately
118,000, awarded its coveted Editors' Choice award to the Compaq
ProLiant 5000 in a comparative review of nine Internet servers in its
issue dated September 16, 1996. Other Internet servers compared to
the Compaq ProLiant 5000 in the test program include the Apple
Network Server 700, Digital Internet AlphaServer 1000A 5/300, IBM
RS/6000 43P Internet Powersolution Workgroup Server, Sun Netra, AST
Manhattan Commerce Pro, Cubix ERS/FT II, Intergraph Web Server, and
the Tatung Compstation U170-1.

Compaq ProLiant 5000 Systems Highlights

The ProLiant 5000 unit tested by the Computer Reseller News Test
Center contained dual Pentium Pro processors running at 200 MHz with
an integrated Level-2 cache that enables data transfers between the
processor and the cache to occur at a speed of 200 MHz. The unit
includes expansion room for a total of four Pentium Pro 166 or 200
MHz processors; up to 4 GB of memory, and total storage of 700GB.
The ProLiant 5000 offers reliability, scalability and
high-availability features. These features include: optional 2+1
redundant Processor Power Modules to increase system availability; a
new Pre-Failure Warranty for Pentium Pro processors; and redundant
Netelligent 10/100 TX controllers to eliminate the network adapter as
a single point of failure. For I/O-intensive web server
applications, the ProLiant 5000 offers eight times -- or 276MB/sec --
the aggregate input/output capability of Pentium-based systems and
ECC-protected internal data buses.
The ProLiant 5000 supports key Compaq options such as the Compaq
SMART-2 Array controller -- which allows RAID storage to be added while
the system is operational; and the Compaq DLT Tape Array -- which can
back up 200GB of data in less than five hours with full RAID
protection.
Included in the ProLiant 5000 are Compaq's SmartStart for Windows
NT 4.0, Microsoft Internet Information Server 2 web server software,
Microsoft FrontPage web authoring software, and the Tripoli search
engine. Windows NT Server 4.0 includes a Domain Name Server, FTP and
gopher server.

Service and Support

Compaq-branded Service and Support Offerings (CSSO) are available
for the ProLiant 5000, ensuring enterprise customers access to
enhanced levels of service and support for a high availability web
server.
CSSO offerings were developed to enhance and extend the service
portfolio of Compaq's Systems Service Providers. These offerings
include services such as: 7x24 hardware and software services;
installation services; systems healthcheck services to identify
potential issues before they affect system performance; remote
management services for ongoing network and systems monitoring and
maintenance; and comprehensive systems management services. The vast
network of service providers ensures customers receive service
coverage for the ProLiant 5000 when and where they need it, whether
on a local, national, regional or global basis.
