They have already had the agreement in place with Kroger for a few months.
Kroger is the major supermarket in my area and I picked up one of those Priceline cards to bid, but I haven't used it yet. Basically, it sounds like a time consuming hassle to use. First you get on the net and bid for groceries. If your bids are accepted, you go to the store, take the items off the shelf, put them in your cart and go to the checkout. Then you must separate the Priceline bid items from any other items you picked out and they priceline items must be rung up separately from the others you have chosen at the cashier before you pay. Sounds like fun, doesn't it?
I don't know how well this will catch on, not only for the abovmentioned hassle, but also because of the basic difference between grocery shopping and shopping for another item, for example a stereo. While you might know that the best price around for the stereo might be $300.00, and use that as a basis for your bid, it's different when you're talking about a $2.00 can of pineapple. Furthermore, when you're in the store you can more easily decide whether it's a better buy on an item on a cost per ounce basis when you have different size products next to each other on the shelf, but on the web you can't easily do that.
If this contract helps move PCLN's stock price, I think it will be temporary, as when people realize how much time this takes they will say the heck with shopping this way. JMHO |
