"The Kingdom of God is spread upon the Earth and men do not see it." - Gospel of Thomas circa 50AD
The apocalypse is personal, not universal. It reflects a change of heart and mind, and not necessarily in that order. Stop worrying about when or if Jesus is coming back. Spiritually, he never left.
Gospel of Thomas history: After the ancient manuscript find at Nag Hamadhi, Egypt in 1945, two years before the Dead Sea Scrolls were found at Qumran, a complete Coptic language version (an old Egyptian tongue) of the Gospel of Thomas was discovered as one of the Nag Hamadhi texts, but was dated 2nd century and therefore dismissed by many as just another Gnostic Gospel. However, after scholars discovered pages of the Gospel of Thomas in Greek at Oxyrynchus dated at 50AD or earlier, they revisited their previous mistake, putting 50AD Thomas before Paul's Letters 52-60AD and the New Testament Gospels (Mark 70AD, Matthew 85AD, Luke 90AD, John 100AD), as well as placing Thomas long before the actual Gnostic Gospels of 100AD-300AD.
The best translation of the Gospel of Thomas acknowledged by scholars is by Marvin Meyer. It consists of 114 sayings of Jesus. The footnotes themselves are a great history lesson. Happy researching! |
