I didn't know about the "stranglehold" the aspartame & saccarine (sp?) industry seems to have over the sweetener market, but I'm not surprised to find this out. Look what the auto industry has done in the past to "discourage" production of the electric car and/or those that run on methanol and other alternative fuels. After all, they don't want their own pocketbook hurt, do they?

Since learning that other cultures have used a natural and alternative sweetener for hundreds of years with no ill effects, that would make me think any possible/necessary, if any, approval process could be speeded up, so to speak, since there is already so much evidence of use. Looks like it would depend on the objectivity and freedom from conflict of interest on the part of the FDA.
