It seems clear to me that the reporters don't really understand what Transmeta is supplying here. Transmeta is just "code morphing" the new instructions that Sledgehammer will have, which gives a platform for simulating the next generation software before the actual debugged silicon is available. This is cool, and much faster than silicon, but there is no reason they couldn't provide the same service to Intel for a price. The point is, it is NOT a server technology.

If Transmeta were clever, they'd use this new trick to make a line of "accelerated chip simulators" (accelerated relative to software). However, it is not clear to me how easy it is for TMTA to simulate new instructions, nor how easy it is to prove their implementations will be true to eventual silicon (or that a logic simulator wouldn't ultimately be a cheaper solution when taking all the variables into account).

It's a neat idea, but the only advantage I could imagine for AMD to buy TMTA would be to keep Intel from using the technology IF it really does speed up the development process.
