You are entitled to your opinion.

Other than the reasons why Java is better than other languages like portability, ease of programming/prototyping, object oriented features, automatic memory management etc., the facts are that:

1. Java is becoming immensely popular, and being
accepted much faster and much more, than the other languages you
mentioned, because is of it's Ease of Programming. It is already
the language of choice on the client side. The reason it is not
being used heavily for server applications is speed. If and when
that is solved, there is no reason not to believe it will be
equally successful on the server side.

2. It is veiwed (and actually is) as the choice of language for
internet related programming, of which there is a good chance
of an explosion which is already under way.

3. The biggest threat is from Microsoft, in terms of (non) adoption and (non) support but it could also be the biggest threat to MSFT itself.

Conclusion: Java is not just hype or BS. Whether it will ever
become what Sun wants it to become, is another story.

(but what else did you expect from a Sun employee (-:
