Taiwan's DVD Player Sales Less than Expected
October 7, 1998 (TAIPEI) -- Due to the prevailing wait-and-see atmosphere amid the global economic slowdown, Taiwan's annual sales of DVD players are expected to reach only 35,000 to 40,000 units in 1998.
Early this year, DVD player sales in Taiwan had been projected to expand to 50,000 units for 1998, as compared with 10,000 units in 1997.
Pioneer Electronic (Taiwan) Corp., the largest DVD player supplier in the local market, sells about 1,200 units a month. The company normally accounts for about 40 percent of Taiwan's market. The second-ranking supplier, Matsushita Electric (Taiwan) Co. Ltd., has a monthly output of 800 units, followed by 600 for Toshiba Corp.'s local company.
To stimulate demand, makers of DVD players are offering special promotions, including free software with the purchase of a DVD player. However, even this method has failed to boost sales significantly.
Manufacturers are looking forward to seeing better sales in the year's final quarter. Acer Sertek Inc., which targets an annual output of 5,000 units, has sold 2,000 DVD players since sales began in May. It hopes to sell 3,000 units in the fourth quarter.
