M2 PRESSWIRE-7 October 1998-GLOBECAST: GlobeCast Northern Europe launches DigiCast (C)1994-98 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

-- Secure, fast and flexible delivery of audio, video and data via satellite

GlobeCast Northern Europe (NE) has today announced the launch of DigiCast, its new digital satellite delivery system for businesses. The PC based service distributes live or archived audio, video and data to the desktop or television via a broadcast transmission system. GlobeCast NE's global satellite network allows DigiCast to transmit content to large numbers of geographically dispersed sites securely, cost effectively and at speeds 1,000 times faster than other delivery methods.

Sarah Williams, Chief Executive of GlobeCast NE commented: "DigiCast will give users access to a new generation of satellite services. It is an extremely secure and efficient method of distributing all types of information at speeds over 1,000 times faster than other delivery systems and at broadcast quality.

"The advantages of broadcasting data in this way are of use to all business sectors. For example, an advertising agency may wish to deliver a 30-second TV commercial. By conventional methods, this can take over a day for a courier, over five hours via the Internet, between 35 - 90 minutes by modem or ISDN. However, through DigiCast it takes approximately 1.5 minutes and can be delivered to multiple sites simultaneously, be they in the same building or distributed across the globe. DigiCast is much faster than the Internet and lets content providers download sophisticated multimedia information with video, animation and CD-quality sound," she continued.

GlobeCast NE's DigiCast system supplements existing communication services and provides a link between the PC and broadcasters so that digital TV and real- time Internet content can be delivered over the same system. The foundation for distribution of DigiCast is provided through NDS, the leading provider of digital broadcast technology.

Brad McGill, sales manager, multimedia broadcast at GlobeCast NE, said: "The DigiCast satellite delivery system is scalable, simple to install and because it is FP based enables easy integration with existing IT infrastructures and software. Configuration is flexible and using standard IP, all audio and visual so ware developments can be utilised.

"The limitations of the Internet revolve around bandwidth and it is likely to be many years before video can be delivered at an acceptable quality. GlobeCast NE believes that users expect to view broadcast quality video - any less detracts from the content and the message. It is this quality that DigiCast provides."

D1giCast has many business applications. Its high- speed file transfer is of use to all industries; such as advertising, travel, medical and retail. The users can request or distribute market information, weather or financial details.

For example, a pub chain that has 50 outlets and requires at least five new pop videos to be loaded into in-house video juke boxes every week, will no longer need to send two staff around to each pub to update the juke boxes. The five video clips can be transmitted to each pub in 17 and a half minutes; the cost implications are obvious.

Other applications include 'Point of Sale', whereby a company can send out video advertising to all its stores overnight, these advertisements will then play automatically according to a pre-set schedule. Different advertisements can be sent to different locations or the same advertisement can be transmitted to every site but wit different prices according to the region.

Desktop training is also a key application. DigiCast allows companies to distribute training materials to remote classrooms as well as allowing live broadcasts, creating a virtual classroom. 'Pupils' can download specific videos and view these in the classroom or see it streamed to their PC. Integration of DigiCast into the Intranet enables multimedia tutorials to be delivered via satellite with results returned centrally via the Internet or an Intranet.

Financial information, news and weather can all be delivered through DigiCast in real time to the PC, either being sent out from the centre or requested by the end user. All sites can receive the same information and at the same time, ensure a high level of accuracy and commonality. DigiCast would also be ideal for travel agents, e.g. view the latest video of your hotel and surrounding areas of interest.

DigiCast is a product unique to GlobeCast NE. For more information contact the DigiCast Hotline number: +44 (0)171 753 3683 or e-mail: info@globecastne.com.
