ST, I suppose in the hubris of dot.com mania, people in dot.coms developed a feeling of omnipotence and felt little need to be unctuously respectful of their customers, solicitious of their opinions and careful of their needs.

Now, the chickens have come home to roost and it's dot.gone panic.

In the early days of a business, [Hooray for Brad, Jeff and Jill], customer/member relations are very personal and there's a feeling of belonging. Now, there isn't such a feeling of belonging. More's the pity.
