"Being spat upon — having a passenger spit in your face, spit in your mouth, spit in your eye — is a physically and psychologically traumatic experience," said John Samuelsen, the union's president. "If transit workers are assaulted, they are going to take off whatever amount of time they are going to take off to recuperate.""

This is ridiculous. Waiters, constructions workers, and cab drivers who get spit upon don't get to take paid time off. They can prosecute their perpetrators through the normal channels, like the rest of us, but why do union employees think they deserve special treatment?

Why have the organizations on the other side of this union agreement accepted this type of thing? There are lots of potential bus drivers looking for work. Fire all the union bus drivers and hire a new set of drivers at 60% of the current workers pay. Then cut bus fares by 10%. Hell, have every day of the month that begins with a 3 be a free ride day.
