You can see that their No 1 competitor CSCO does not have the technological know how to make new breakthroughs in ATM

I caught the NN presentation at the JP Morgan conference in Laguna Niguel this afternoon and had a great chat with Jamie Avis afterwards.

I asked about the Cisco USWest situation and he said their position had been exaggerated. Yes, they won a contract, but NN is still very much in the ballgame and their strength is in carrier class equipment with a proven track record. Some don't realize service providers insist on much more rigorous testing than enterprise customers. Look at what happened to Ascend and their GRF switch. I also think NN is ahead with SS7 which Ascend admitted it was working on but didn't have as yet.

From my NN notes:

Growth of network equipment market --- $100B USD by 2000. Carrier class versus corporate --- 70 to 30.

Broadband Multiservice Networks --- biggest growth. First 3 Qs '98 have passed all of '97.

Key success factors:
* Center-weighted management
* Total software control
* Integration of access technology

Advantages of 36170---
* An evolving platform --- to over 50 Gb/s and 30K T1/E1 ports.
* SS7 internetworking
* QoS for carrier customers
* Full standards compliant

In CSI --- Carrier Class Internetworking, they'll have other partners to announce going forward.

Their affiliate, Cambrian, will have WDM --- 32 channel for urban rings --- out this summer.

They are transitioning LAN customers to 3Com.

36190 timing? This year.

When I told Mr. Avis I'd been following his company for over a year but had only started buying at 20+, he responded with obvious envy, "I wish I could have!" He spoke of TM's competitiveness and said the company would not give up any market share without a fight. We all know NN has the lead in carrier class ATM products, but it's also true there are wolves baying at their heels. Or should I say "ascending?"

Gotta run.

Pat
