Your experience on SI is quite similar to mine. The threads I started on were tech oriented but as we built friendships we began to discuss politics. The old Foreign Affairs Discussion Group (was that the right name?) was terrific. It's what I meant by sharp disagreements within assumptions of shared basic convictions.

And it was terrifically well moderated. But once the moderator's health caused him to leave, it began to deteriorate. And it became much more like what that general political conversation was becoming.

However, I'm still convinced that the basic tribalism problem right now is that Trump governs as a tribalist.
