I think your recollection of the circumstances surrounding thalidomide are incorrect.

35 years ago thalidomide was not approved by the FDA and the people who took the drug here obtained it from overseas, presumably in Germany where it was being manufactured and prescribed. Don't hang that one on the FDA.
