Is it that it was so well-defended that it was such a disaster? A lot of factors. Terrible bombing raid. Complete failure of the tanks to get ashore. The History Channel had a great analysis recently. What kept us on the beach? Fantastic job by the offshore Destroyers of taking out bunkers with their 5 inchers. The Rangers going ashore there instead of at the Cliffs. They made it up to the bunkers.
