Kathleen,

Thanks for posting the link to the article. Fascinating. Did you notice this from the article:

''We are delighted that Judge Kimball will not let the FDA split hairs when it comes to people's good health,'' said Michael Q. Ford, executive director of the National Nutritional Foods Association."

It seems like Michael Q. Ford and the NNFI are major players in this story. Does the name "Michael Q. Ford" ring any bells? Check this out from PRLN's recent press release:

Paracelsian Testing Demonstrates Functionality of St.
John's Wort Products

Ithaca, N.Y., June 3, 1998. In the first testing of its kind, Paracelsian, Inc. has confirmed the biological activity of a variety of St. John's Wort products utilizing its proprietary BioFIT(tm) (Bio Functional Integrity Tested) "functional" quality assurance model.

The testing was commissioned by the National Nutritional Foods
Association (NNFA) as part of a more comprehensive review by
Paracelsian of Natural Products Industry St. John's Wort products. Six
different St. John's Wort products, purchased off the shelf at natural
food stores, were evaluated for their ability to inhibit the re-uptake of serotonin and dopamine. Inhibition of the re-uptake of these
neurotransmitters suggests, based on extensive clinical data, biological activity consistent with claims on product labels related to mood support and feelings of general well being.

"We are delighted with these results," said NNFA Executive Director
Michael Q. Ford.
"The Paracelsian functionality testing was the key to our ability to stand firm on the value and quality of our members' St. John's Wort products."

It seems like Michael Ford is an important player in this market. It certainly doesn't hurt to have him on our side.
