Charles, because Cakewalk is hardware-dependant (it talks DIRECTLY to your synthesizer or MIDI port) I would not expect it to run on NT.
While I haven't attempted to run the Win95 IE on NT, I presume that this is more an enhancement issue than compatability. Netscape has a single version for 95/NT.
I would LIKE to see Sun put more emphasis on X86. I've read that they intend to. But, so far, X86 is Sun's uncle they never like to talk about.
I LIKE Solaris X86, though the Unix nerds I talk to much prefer Linux on X86 for it's performance. The reason I like Solaris, even though it is slower, is because it's very faithful to the Sparc version - same set of utilities, same set of admin tools, etc. so I can leverage my knowledge of Solaris instead of learning all of the intricacies of Linux.
But, when analyzing the impact on SUNW, the stock, I have to be realistic - while *I* like Solaris X86, the vast majority of people running Unix on X86 do NOT. Solaris X86 is NOT a significant player in the X86 Unix market, nor does it represent significant revenues for Sun. (In fact, I suspect it represents a loss.)
I think it's important that we not blind ourselves here just because we own the stock. We need to be aware of weaknesses, and be able to differentiate between hype and reality.
Any time I get universally positive on a stock, I know it is time to head for the door... |
