RESEARCH ALERT-UBS slashes Texas Instruments '02 view
NEW YORK, Nov 1 (Reuters) - UBS Warburg on Thursday said it cut its 2002 earnings-per-share estimate in half for Texas Instruments Inc. (NYSE:TXN - news), a day after the world's No. 1 maker of computer chips for mobile phones warned that its fourth-quarter semiconductor revenues will dip 5 percent from third-quarter levels in a tough market for chips.

Analyst Thomas Thornhill lowered his outlook to 4 cents from 8 cents a share, citing delayed sales and lower gross margins.

Thornhill said in a research note that he now expects the fourth quarter to be followed by a ``relatively flat'' sales trend into the first quarter of 2002, in line with historical trends. As inventories have reverted to normal levels, Thornhill said sequential sales patterns will do the same. He lowered his sales view for March 2002 to reflect these patterns, and increased his June 2002 sales growth forecast.

``As a consequence, this creates a greater back-end loaded 2002 year,'' Thornhill said
