You are very right on that! But consider this.

The psychogenic patient will probably benefit from knowing
that he "has a few left" sitting there "just in case."
Once he learns that "it worked" he may decide to hold onto
them in case the need arises (or arise fails <ggg>), maybe
due to "performance anxiety" with a new partner.
