Some interesting data on technology penetration.....
According to CEMA's telephone surveys of household penetration, as of June, 98% of U.S. homes had color TV, 98% had radios, 96% had corded telephones, 91% had VCRs, 71% had some form of CD (including CD-ROM), 61% had TV with stereo sound, 44% had a personal computer, 32% had a camcorder, 29% had a modem (up sharply since 1996), 18% had multi-line phones, 12% had projection TV (but 20% said they had home-theater systems), 12% had satellite receivers (this is a slightly higher percentage than satellite-industry figures would provide), and a very constant 2% had laserdisc players.

You don't often hear about USSB, sharing satellites and an encoding system with DirecTV. As of September 30, they had just over two million subscribers (including 150,000 getting a free month), and their third-quarter loss was down to about $9 million from a previous $28 million. |
