At first I thought he was serious regarding this interview. Now that he is on an apology tour of the Beltway, I doubt it.

No, that's not how I read it. If the plan is get fired or take charge, he doesn't actually want to be fired; he just wants to be insubordinate enough that he ought to be fired, then get away with it. Remember what Michael Yon said about calling him "President McChrystal" if he isn't fired. What happens to his relative position vis-a-vis President Obama if he apologizes and isn't fired?
