Go to uspto.gov to search for a patent. Look in the left column at that site for "searchable databases" and click it. Then select the full-text patent database. I used it to search for "wave AND division AND multiplexing" and found 14 patents filed in 1999-2000 that were produced by that search.

If you have a better idea of the "buzzwords" that would be in a description of the patent, or better yet, the patent number, you should be able to find the full disclosure of the invention within seconds, for free.

Other information about patents as offensive and defensive business tools is in the text-searchable "Tax, Legal and Accounting Resources Forum" and some other threads scattered in the Q&A Database at Port4.com, a free community for e-business professionals. That is at:
port4.com

I was fortunate to have looked at MEAD on the basis of its chart and fundamentals, and as God is my witness, bought on Tuesday under $32 as it cleared the handle of its cup-and-handle formation, without knowledge of the Terabeam deal, which hit on Wednesday. I am a happy and very fortunate camper. And even more a devotee of William J. O'Neill.
