this is why Reform became a western thing, not simply a narrow albertan cause - were we wrong in doing that?

First answer -- don't confuse Ralph and Reform. Ralph, to the extent that he thinks at all, is a mushy liberal. He'd be perfectly at home in the Liberal Party, and in fact almost ended up there. There's a certain irony that Ralph beat Nancy for the PC leadership and she went to the Libs, 'cause it could easily have been the other way around.

Second answer -- I don't know why no one from the Alberta govt. is speaking up. It may be a case of having to pick your hills to die on, although softwood came up long before Kyoto. I have to confess to a poor understanding as to the specifics of the issue, but I do know that Alberta's stumpage system is very different from B.C.'s. The deal Getty made with Diashowa (sp?) in the 80s may be one reason that Ralph wants to keep quiet. Or it might be as simple as Ralph not caring. Beats me -- Lougheed, for all his other failings, used to be a good coalition builder, and even managed to work effectively with Levesque. Wouldn't hurt Ralph to take a page from that book.
