AVIC cellular network scheduled to begin operations in October First China revenues expected in 4th qtr 1996
NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--September 25, 1996--
AVIC has received all necessary government approvals... According to AVIC chairman and CEO Joseph R. Wright, commercial operations in Shijiazhuang, the capital of Hebei, should begin in October, three months ahead of schedule. Plans call for commercial operations in three additional cities by the end of 1996, and seven more cities by mid-1997. When complete, Phase I of the project will provide service to 70,000 subscribers in Hebei's eleven largest cities, a coverage area with a population of more than 50 million people. Further construction is intended to expand the network to 200,000 subscribers by the year 2000.
"Government approval means that in less than two years AVIC will have taken its first project through development, financing and initial construction, all the way to commercial operation and revenue generation before the end of 1996," Wright stated. "We are more than pleased with the pace of this project, and are confident that AVIC has created a successful model for future projects in Hebei and other provinces and with other technologies." >>
