XM Satellite Radio
The one reason I bought some SKYC and the one that everyone seems to be overlooking is the ownership of one, of only two, S-band licenses for satellite broadcast direct to automobiles. They have formed a jointly owned, privately held subsidiary, called "XM Satellite Radio" with privately held Worldspace. The only other license is held by CD Radio (CDRD). On January 15, 1998, American Mobile provided an additional $21.4 million of convertible financing for its subsidiary, XM Satellite Radio Holdings, Inc. which increased their share to 22% of XM. I received a very informative email from Eric Swank, Director Corporate Development and Investor Relations SKYC, which outlined their plans. He explained that "CD Radio has been more visible in their activities due to the fact that they are publicly traded and are a DARS "pure play.", but my feeling is that as soon as CDRD starts to launch someone is going to look to see who holds the other license. They have contracted with Hughes and Alcatel to construct 2 HS-702 satellites with 100 channel capability. This license could be their most valuable asset. They plan to be in service about the same time as CDRD. For more info about this service check out xmradio.com
