Conservative:

Buy T-bills through Treasury Direct (get out of financial institutions) and gold. I checked Waterhouse on 12/06 Brit Gilts, and retail gets murdered, so no dice.

Aggressive:

Buy gold, Yen, Brit Pound, put cheap premium puts on XLF, IWM, RTH, SPY, XLY. XLY and XLF are thinnly traded, go inside the spreads and watch your execution. Homebuilder puts are expensive, I'd instead use bear spreads, buy puts higher strike, sell lower. No idea on timing really.

<large brokers like Ameritrade in this?>

Mainly I'd just worry about who's borrowing you money, and what they are doing with it.
