I think the tests were good for two reasons:

1) Shows independent resolve on the part of the Indian government to defend its borders.

2) Reminds those who would become complacent about nuclear weapons that the capacity to make them and use them is spreading.

These two benefits were accomplished without the shedding of blood. They contribute first to stability of the region and second to a heightened awareness of the growing nuclear 'family' in other parts of the world.
