AFLAC ws one of those that could have been destroyed in the financial crisis - if I remember correctly, their investment portfolio was chuck full of preferred stock of financials. If those financials went bust, AFLAC would have been finished too or at the very least they could have been forced to a very dilutive offering at the bottom to recapitalize.
