The Philadelphia Eagles moved quickly in filling their vacant quarterback coach position, promoting assistant quarterbacks coach Press Taylor to the role (per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport). Taylor replaces John DeFilippo, who accepted the Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator job last week.
The 30-year old Taylor is a rising star in the Eagles coaching ranks, moving up from an offensive quality control coach in 2013 (when hired by the Eagles) to his promotion as assistant quarterbacks coach in 2016 by head coach Doug Pederson. Taylor was a two-year letterman as quarterback at Marshall in the late 2000s. Philadelphia will need to find a replacement for Taylor as offensive quality control and assistant quarterbacks coach (his prior role with the organization).
Taylor has worked with Carson Wentz since the day he was drafted, turning him from a FCS prospect with a lot of talent into a MVP candidate in just two seasons. The results showed on the field in year two, as Wentz completed 60.2 percent of his passes for 3,296 yards, 33 touchdowns, seven interceptions, and a 101.9 passer rating in 2017. Wentz set the Eagles franchise record for passing touchdowns in a season. He also finished first in touchdown percentage (7.5 percent), third in yards per completion (13.5), fourth in quarterback rating (101.9), and first in total quarterback rating (74.4).
Despite missing the final three games, Wentz still finished second in touchdown passes (33) on the season. Wentz also set Eagles rookie records in passing yards (3,792) and touchdowns (16) in 2016, despite playing just 39 snaps that preseason.
Taylor's role won't change much, as he was part of the play design process with DeFliippo, Pederson, and the departed Frank Reich. He was the coach who presents the "Philly Special" to Pederson, who used the touchdown pas to Nick Foles to spark the Eagles Super Bowl victory over the New England Patriots.
Taylor beat out Mike Groh for the job, but Groh is also in the running with Duce Staley for the Eagles vacant offensive coordinator position. The Eagles are expected to promote from within for that role. <<
