I wouldn't try to defend the events or policies that has led to a nuclear weapon aresenal in any country. But that does not mean that India , or any other country, has any legitimate reasons whatsoever for nuclear testing.

I find your comments and tippet's notion that it is good for India to show her independence as scary and dark a mind image as any I have ever seen.

The really remarkable thing about the testing is that it earmarks the highjacking of India's policy by a minority party that also happens to be extreme in their beliefs. This is not a source of comfort by any measure.
