Aloha Mike,

I found the follow references to pico on the QCOM thread. The reply numbers are listed, but searching the Qcom thread for pico will give the complete text.

Also to provide 3G services you will need to have big enough blocks of spectrum. So the 800MHz operators with very little spectrum will have a hard time. A solution for the TDMA 800 Mhz based operators is EDGE lite to offer a couple of hundred kbps rather that the IMT-2000 stipulated 384 kbps.
Wasn't the TDD mode the one that Alcatel and Siemens were trying to push originally? Ideal for pico cell structure? Anyone shed light on that?

The standards of course are not in stone yet. However the 3 modes of CDMA as decided in brazil is more than likely the way (the IMT-2000 umbrella standard will also include the IS-136/EDGE solution). The three modes even include a mode that was being promoted by Alcatel and Siemens (more for pico sites), the other 2 of course are the ones promoted by Nokia/Ericsson and then Qualcomm.

Its Modesto field trial used ultra-small, or "pico" base stations, supplied by Hyundai Electronics and Samsung Telecommunications
America Inc., that can be installed on street light standards and thus are less expensive to purchase, operate, maintain and locate
compared to conventional designs. The company also used network switching gear provided by computer telephony vendors
Tecore Inc. and TELOS Engineering Ltd., whose equipment can connect with many different radio base station manufacturers.
Other participants included Fujant Inc., which provided a new radio amplifier technology, and Celletra Ltd., which developed an
integrated tower-top active antenna system designed to enhance the performance of compact cellular and personal
communications services base stations. The specification for interoperability between CDMA base station and switching
equipment recently adopted by the CDMA Development Group was developed under the leadership of Sprint PCS, said Jim
Takach, advanced systems team leader at CDG.
