Lee,
The point of splits is to make the stock more affordable to small investors by lowering the price. Another huge benefit for long term investors is it takes some of the volatility away. You mentioned MSFT and how hard it is to move the stock, this is a benefit because it gives support to the price. JDSU make 50 point moves on low volume. Sure its nice when they are to the upside but it really sucks when it's going down. The goal of investors should be to someday own 10,000 shares of a $100+ with a huge float and low valatility. MSFT has now recovered from the pullback when the justice dept started their action. DELL has split seven times in six years and is now a pretty stable stock without the killer volatility of thin stocks. QCOM is down 10 today and presplit thats 80 points (two splits last year) Splits are good for investors. All the great companies have mulitple splits.
