when 56K was announced Ascend made a promise to its customers that it would do exactly that. The idea was not to have Max sales plummet to the ground while ISPs and others waited for the modems. It was more a matter of what it would cost if they DIDN'T make that commitment. And competitors were making similar commitments, plus USR said theirs would be upgradeable to 56K. The response was appropriate to fit the situation. It may well be that the traded in modems can be reworked and updated to be resold or otherwise recycled. Dee Jay
