Peter Wehner in Contentions notes and quotes:

“If you ask me where the silver lining is for President Obama, I have to say I cannot see one,” according to William Galston, a former domestic adviser to President Clinton. “Just as BP’s failure to cap the well has been so damaging, Obama’s failure to cap unemployment will be his undoing. There is nothing he can do to affect the jobless rate before November.”

I'd say Obama has ONE obvious silver lining: he'll have a Republican Congress to run against in 2012, just like Clinton had in 1996. He can hope to make it work for him the way Bill did.

Needless to say, this particular silver lining is not making Obama more popular in the Democratic caucus right now. But there's not much Obama could do to help them if he tried: PPP notes that an Obama endorsement will make only about 30% of responders more likely to vote for a candidate, but 50% less likely; Obama is statistically tied with Sarah Palin in that regard!
