"Broad Disapproval of Obama Spill Response in the Gulf [Daniel Foster]

A New ABC News/Washington Post poll shows widespread disapproval of the Obama administration's handling of the Gulf oil spill, both nationally and locally.

Overall, 53 percent of Americans disapprove of Obama's handling of the spill, up four points from an early June poll. "Strong" disapproval of his job has climbed seven points to 40 percent, with the sharpest increase coming among Republicans.

In the Alabama, Florida, Louisiana and Mississippi counties where oil has already begun washing ashore, 73 percent disapprove of the job the president is doing managing the spill (59 percent strongly), while 24 percent approve.

While all of those counties except Orleans parish lean Republican, 50 percent of Democrats and left-leaning independents also disapprove.

On the administration's drilling moratorium, Gulf residents are similarly displeased. Six in ten respondents nationally, and seven in ten in areas nearest the spill, oppose the moratorium. Nearly three-quarters of respondents think drilling should resume at previous levels or expand.
